Screenings:

Screenings are done in the clinic for Early 5’s, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and all new students. Some of the screenings include vision, hearing, stereopsis, muscle balance, color vision, and the random dot E test.

The Healthy Choices for Healthy Children Act was signed into Ohio law on June 18, 2010. This law promotes a healthy diet and a healthy weight for children.

We will begin conducting body mass index (BMI) screenings each year for all students in kindergarten, third grade, and fifth grade; as the law requires. The BMI data will be reported to the Ohio Department of Health each year.

Appropriate space:

  • We provide a private area to decrease the exposure of germs.
  • Being located so close to the door for parent pick-up, we lower the risk for infection to spread.
  • We have a private area where clothes are provided for emergencies; excessive bleeding, wet pants, menstrual issues, and food spills. Students no longer need to go home if clothes are soiled.
  • The location of the clinic is less disruptive to continual learning.
  • Space is available for screenings to be conducted in the clinic.
  • The clinic also provides services to staff as needed, such as blood pressure monitoring, blood sugar checks, measuring weight progress, injections, and always a listening ear.

Documentation:

  • Each clinic visit is documented.
  • Accident reports are completed for severe injuries.
  • Parents are called when deemed necessary.
  • A note is sent home when medication is given.
  • Immunization compliance is monitored according to state regulations.
  • A state report is completed in October.
  • Illnesses are tracked by line and bar graphs to monitor illness trends.
  • Specific teaching programs are presented as needed and/or requested.
